The "C Series" £50 was the highest denomination in regular Irish circulation for most of its run, though it was never a note most people handled with any frequency — the value represented roughly a week's take-home pay for many workers when the series launched. The Central Bank had taken printing in-house by this point, a deliberate policy decision made in the early 1970s to reduce reliance on foreign security printers, most notably Waterlow and De La Rue, who had handled earlier Irish issues.
Two signature combinations span the series across nearly a decade. The later pairing — Doyle and Cromien — reflects Seán Cromien's tenure as Secretary of the Department of Finance, a joint-signatory arrangement unique to Irish practice among contemporary central banks.
