ISLAMIC WORLD 15TH CENTURY
Reverse description The reverse depicts a detailed panoramic view of the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in Jerusalem, rendered with the characteristic dome and flanking minarets; a large crescent moon shape frames the lower portion of the architectural scene. Above the mosque, two ornate medallions are prominently displayed in the upper field, inscribed respectively with 'الله' (Allah) and 'محمد' (Muhammad) in stylised Arabic calligraphy within decorated circular cartouches. An Arabic legend appears at the top of the field reading 'القرن الخامس عشر الهجري' (The Fifteenth Hijri Century), commemorating the advent of the 15th century of the Islamic calendar. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.

Additional information

Issued to mark the beginning of the fifteenth century of the Islamic calendar — 1400 AH fell in November 1979 — this piedfort was produced at a moment of acute political transition in Sudan. Numayri's government had just begun its sharp pivot toward Islamization, a process that would culminate in the 1983 imposition of sharia law. The commemorative program of which this piece forms part was partly an assertion of that ideological direction.

Piedforts of this type were struck in strictly limited numbers for presentation and collector purposes, never entering circulation. At twice the standard planchet thickness, the 33.93g weight reflects that format precisely.
