Obverse description A detailed vignette of Al-Azhar Mosque occupies the central field, its minarets rising against an open background. Al-Azhar, commissioned in 970 by the Fatimid caliph Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah and regarded as the first mosque established in Cairo, is rendered with architectural precision. Bilingual inscriptions in Arabic and English frame the design alongside the issuer's title and denomination.
