The Bank of Sudan was established in 1960, replacing the Sudan Currency Board that had managed the country's currency since independence in 1956. This series spans a decade of considerable political turbulence — Nimeiry's 1969 coup had occurred just months before the earliest dated examples, and the note continued through the failed counter-coup of 1971 and the subsequent consolidation of single-party rule under the Sudanese Socialist Union.
The overlap of Ibrahim Nimir's signature across four distinct date ranges, including two separate 1978 dates, reflects administrative continuity during a period when Sudan's banking structure was being reorganized under Islamic finance pressures that would culminate in the 1984 monetary reforms.
