Bayerische Braunkohlen-Industrie A.G. operated lignite mining works near Schwandorf in the Upper Palatinate, and like hundreds of German industrial firms it issued zinc notgeld during the acute metal and currency shortages of the early 1920s. Company scrip of this kind circulated exclusively within the issuing firm's payroll and company store ecosystem — redeemable on-site, worthless beyond the factory gates.
Zinc was the default material precisely because copper, nickel, and brass had been stripped from civilian coinage production during the war and had not returned to private use.
