Oranienburg was one of the earliest Nazi concentration camps, operational from 1933, and among the first to implement an internal scrip system designed to restrict prisoner purchasing power to camp-controlled canteen goods. The scrip was not currency in any functional sense — it was an administrative control mechanism, issued against prisoner labor earnings and redeemable only within the camp's own structure, ensuring that no real money ever passed through prisoner hands.
Camb#4038 is among the rarer denominations from this issuer. Oranienburg was dissolved and the site repurposed in 1934 when the SS consolidated camp administration under a centralized model, giving this scrip an unusually short window of issue.
