This note was issued specifically to commemorate the Mitteldeutsche Notgeldausstellung — the Central German Notgeld Exhibition — held in Erfurt in 1922, making it one of the more self-referential objects in the Notgeld canon: emergency currency issued to celebrate the phenomenon of emergency currency. By 1922, Serienscheine of this kind were produced explicitly for collectors rather than for transactional use, a market that had become substantial enough to sustain entire print runs designed never to circulate.
Robert Sandrock was a locally active Erfurt artist; both printers named in the production credits were Erfurt firms, an unusual case of entirely local manufacture from design through press.
