Landsberg in Oberschlesien — now Góra Świętej Anny in Poland — issued this note during the plebiscite period that followed the Treaty of Versailles. The March 1921 Upper Silesia plebiscite, which preceded this note's issue by weeks or months at most, returned a majority for Germany, yet the region was ultimately partitioned by the League of Nations in October 1921. Whether Landsberg anticipated that outcome is unclear, but the town ended up on the German side of the border — for twenty-three years.
Notgeld of this type was often printed in large quantities with little intent to redeem; collector demand was substantial and issuers knew it.
