Groß-Rosenburg is a small locality in Saxony-Anhalt, and this token was issued by a private estate administration — a Gutsverwaltung — almost certainly during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany during World War I. Municipalities, farms, factories, and private landowners across the Reich issued millions of such iron and zinc tokens between roughly 1916 and 1921 to keep local commerce and wage payments functioning when official coinage disappeared from circulation into hoarding and wartime metal requisition.
