Gerolstein's tourist association — the Eifeler Verkehrsverein — issued this note during the Weimar-era Notgeld flood of 1920–1922, when local organizations across Germany printed small-denomination scrip to fill a genuine coin shortage. Tourism and civic promotion bodies were among the stranger issuers to enter that space, though not unheard of in the Rhineland. Schaar & Dathe of Trier were prolific regional printers of Notgeld and handled a considerable volume of similar issues from towns across the Eifel and Moselle.
