The Allgäuer Baumwoll-Spinn- & Weberei, a cotton spinning and weaving mill in Blaichach in the Allgäu region of Bavaria, issued its own zinc tokens during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany in the First World War, when the Reichsbank's silver and nickel coinage disappeared from circulation almost overnight as metal was hoarded or requisitioned. Factory-issued Notgeld of this type was typically redeemable only at the company's own shop or canteen, effectively tying workers' wages to a captive retail environment.
