Arnstadt's Braunsteinwerke — a manganese dioxide mining operation in Thuringia — issued this iron notgeld token during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in the early 1920s. Private industrial firms frequently stepped in to pay workers when Reichsbank coinage simply wasn't reaching factory floors in sufficient quantities. Iron was the obvious material choice: the facility processed it, and aluminum and zinc were already spoken for by larger municipal issuers.
