Issued by a lignite mining operation in Brandenburg during the acute metal shortages of the First World War, this Notgeld token filled the vacuum left when imperial coinage disappeared from circulation as copper, nickel, and brass were redirected to munitions production. Zinc was among the few metals still available for civilian token use, though it corrodes readily in humid conditions — a problem well documented in mine-adjacent environments. Surviving examples in clean, uncorroded condition are accordingly scarcer than raw population figures suggest.
