The Ammoniakwerk Merseburg was BASF's synthetic ammonia plant, constructed from 1916 onward on the Saale river south of Merseburg — a direct consequence of Germany's wartime need to produce nitrogen compounds for both fertilizers and explosives once the British naval blockade cut off Chilean saltpeter imports. The site later became the Leuna-Werk, one of the largest chemical complexes in Central Europe.
