Altena, in the Sauerland region of Westphalia, was a center of wire and metal goods manufacturing for centuries, and firms like Gebr. Knipping were among the industrial operations that issued their own emergency coinage — Notgeld — during the acute small-change shortages of 1917–1921. The "Deutsch-Lux." designation refers to the Deutsch-Luxemburgische Bergwerks- und Hütten-AG, a major steel and mining conglomerate with which Knipping's works were affiliated, indicating this token circulated among factory workers as a wage or canteen substitute rather than in general commerce.
Zinc was the default material for industrial Notgeld of this period precisely because iron and copper were reserved for war production.
