Schopfheim's 1921 notgeld issue was one of several thousand municipal emergency currency series produced across Weimar Germany as small-denomination coinage disappeared from circulation entirely — hoarded, melted, or simply not minted in sufficient volume to meet everyday demand. The embossed municipal seal was the issuer's primary authentication device — straightforward for a small city administration without access to more sophisticated security printing.
