Wörlitz is a small town in Anhalt best known for its 18th-century English landscape garden — a UNESCO World Heritage Site today, though in 1922 the municipal government had rather more pressing concerns. Like hundreds of German municipalities that year, Wörlitz issued its own emergency currency as Reichsbank notes became increasingly inadequate for small transactions during the accelerating inflation. The Magistrat had no printing infrastructure of its own; these Kleingeldscheine were almost certainly produced by a regional commercial printer on short runs.
Anhalt notgeld from this period was rarely redeemed in quantity — by the time redemption windows opened, hyperinflation had rendered the face value meaningless, and many pieces were simply kept as novelties.
