Saarburg's 50 Pfennig notgeld of 1922 belongs to the later wave of German municipal emergency currency — by this point inflation was accelerating rapidly, and many towns were commissioning artistically ambitious small-denomination notes partly as collectibles, knowing the philatelic market would absorb them. Gebrüder Parcus of Munich were among the more accomplished printers working this circuit, producing finely lithographed series for numerous Rhineland municipalities. Martin Mendgen's involvement as designer places this firmly in the local-talent tradition common to Rhenish notgeld commissions.
