Pölzig is a village so small it barely registers in Thuringian administrative history — which makes its 1921 notgeld issue all the more characteristic of the period. The postwar inflation crisis forced even the most obscure German municipalities to produce emergency small change when coins vanished from circulation entirely, hoarded or melted as the mark collapsed.
The printer, Altenburger Spielkartenfabrik, was primarily a playing card manufacturer conscripted into notgeld production alongside dozens of similar regional firms overwhelmed with municipal commissions in 1920–1921. Playing card presses adapted readily to small-format currency work.
