Geestemünde was a busy North Sea port town that merged with Lehe and Bremerhaven in 1924, meaning this Sparkasse ceased to exist as an independent institution within four years of issuing this note. The 1920 date places it squarely in the Notgeld peak — municipal savings banks across Germany were printing emergency small change because coins had effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted during the inflationary spiral following defeat in 1918.
Franz Scherrer of Hannover was a mid-tier regional printer responsible for Notgeld issues from several Lower Saxony municipalities. Not a prestige house, but reliable enough for the volume demands of the period.
