Grimma's Amtshauptmannschaft — a mid-level Saxon administrative district, not a municipal authority — issued this note as part of the broader Notgeld wave that swept Germany from 1916 onward when small-denomination coins disappeared into hoarding and metal collection drives. The issuer is unusually rural for even provincial Notgeld; most district-level emergency issues came from larger urban centers. Adam & Co. in Nerchau was a local print firm operating just a few kilometers from Grimma itself, which likely accounts for the embossed seal as the sole security measure — a practical choice for a printer without intaglio capability.
The v. Poth signature identifies the Amtshauptmann, a royally appointed administrative post that would be abolished entirely with the fall of the Saxon monarchy in November 1918.
