Rathenow's 1917 notgeld issue came out of the same wartime necessity that flooded Germany with thousands of municipal emergency notes — small change had effectively disappeared from circulation as metal coinage was hoarded and requisitioned for war production. The printer, Carl Flemming & T. C. Wiskott A.G., operated out of Glogau (now Głogów), then a German city in the province of Silesia, a major center for commercial printing in the region.
Rathenow itself was historically synonymous with optical instrument manufacturing — the birthplace of the eyeglass lens industry in Germany, a detail that rarely appears in notgeld literature but distinguishes the town from the hundreds of anonymous municipalities issuing identical-format emergency scrip that year.
