| Obverse description | The obverse is printed in black and ochre-orange on a light ground with a pale grey text underprint carrying local mottos and the town name. The large Fraktur inscription 'Gutschein' arches across the upper portion, with the denomination numeral '50' set within a circular coin-vignette at centre, flanked by sprigs of fir in the upper corners. To the left, a validity clause states that the note expires three months after public announcement; to the right, the issuing authority, place of issue 'Ballenstedt Harz', and date '28. Sept. 1920' are inscribed, below which appear two manuscript signatures on behalf of Der Magistrat. |

Ballenstedt is a small town at the foot of the Harz mountains, and this 1920 Pfennig issue belongs to the enormous wave of municipal Notgeld produced across Germany when centrally-issued small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply not minted in sufficient quantities to meet everyday demand. Thousands of German towns did exactly this, but the watermarked paper on the Ballenstedt issue is a minor point of distinction; many comparable municipal notes of this period used plain stock.
