Hamburg Zoo issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the inflationary chaos of the early Weimar Republic, when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. Zoos, museums, railway stations, and private businesses all became de facto issuers during this period, filling a genuine transactional void. The Rademacher printing house in Hamburg was a local commercial printer, not a specialist in security printing, which is consistent with the generally modest production values seen across municipal Notgeld of 1921.

Collector demand for thematic Notgeld — particularly issues from institutions like zoos — drove many issuers to produce more notes than circulation ever required. Whether Hamburg Zoo issued out of necessity or opportunity is worth asking.
