Obverse description Central device comprising the Imperial German eagle (Type 2) displayed with wings spread, surmounted by an imperial crown, and bearing a small shield on its breast. The eagle is flanked on either side by an oak wreath whose branches meet at the base of the design. The mint mark 'A' appears at the bottom of the field, below the wreath. The entire design is framed by a distinctive square-toothed or crenellated border running around the full circumference of the coin.
