Obverse description The Imperial German eagle, displayed with spread wings and bearing a large heraldic shield on its breast, is depicted at center, surmounted by a royal crown. The eagle is framed on both sides by an open wreath of oak leaves and acorns, tied at the base. The mint mark 'A' appears in the lower exergual area beneath the wreath, identifying the Berlin Mint. The border is composed of a fine beaded rim. The design is executed in high relief in the style characteristic of the early German Empire coinage under Wilhelm I.
