| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the large bold numeral '50' flanked by a stylized leaf or shield motif within the zero. The issuer's name 'STADT WATTENSCHEID' curves along the upper periphery, while the denomination 'PFENNIG' is inscribed on a horizontal raised band in the lower central field, below which the date '1920' appears in the exergue. Wattenscheid issued this aluminium notgeld piece in 1920 as the postwar coinage shortage continued to strangle daily commerce across the Ruhr. The city, then an independent municipality before its eventual absorption into Bochum in 1975, was one of dozens of small Westphalian industrial towns forced to produce their own emergency currency when central government supply simply could not keep pace with demand.
