Aanvullende informatie

Wattenscheid issued this iron notgeld piece in 1919 as municipal currency during the acute coin shortage that followed Germany's defeat — the imperial mint system had collapsed, copper and nickel were still being hoarded or diverted, and hundreds of Ruhr district towns resorted to locally authorized iron and zinc pieces to keep small commerce moving. Wattenscheid was then an independent industrial city in the heart of the coalfield, not yet absorbed into Gelsenkirchen, which makes its separate civic issues a footnote to a municipal identity that would eventually be erased by postwar regional consolidation.
