Franz Danzer's banking house in Waldkirchen issued this zinc notgeld piece during the acute small-change crisis that followed World War I, when the German federal government could not produce subsidiary coinage fast enough to meet local demand. Private firms, municipalities, and even individual shops filled the gap with their own emergency issues — legally tolerated, practically necessary. Danzer's bank was one of hundreds of commercial issuers whose pieces circulated purely within a narrow regional radius before being redeemed or simply lost to attrition.
