Robert Dahms was a publisher, not a bank — his Eisenach firm issued this 50 Pfennig note as Notgeld during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in the early 1920s. Retailers, publishers, municipalities, and private businesses all filled the vacuum left by the collapse of coin circulation, and the resulting flood of emergency issues was itself a minor publishing phenomenon. Dahms had obvious means to produce printed material and apparently saw little reason not to join in.
Gebrüder Gotthelft in Cassel had long experience printing commercial and official documents, which kept the physical quality of these notes a step above the cruder municipal issues.
