Obverse description The note is divided into three vertical panels within a red ruled border on a tan paper ground. The left panel carries a Low German text block in Gothic script stating the note's validity for the Heimatspiele in October 1921, dated at foot. The central panel presents a full-length vignette of an East Frisian noblewoman in elaborate period costume dated circa 1500, identified by the caption 'Volkstracht in Höhe um Bedsfrau Trüethid 1500'. The right panel bears the issuing authority legend 'Ausgegeben für den Verein für Heimatschutz und Heimatgeschichte e.V. Leer Ostfriesland' above a large stylised denomination numeral '50' rendered in decorative Gothic numerals; the printer's imprint 'Hartung & Co. Hamburg' and the designer credit 'Arthur Götting – Pretz' appear in the lower margin.

Comments

German notgeld issued by a cultural association rather than a municipality or bank is uncommon. The Verein für Heimatschutz und Heimatgeschichte — a regional heritage and landscape protection society based in Leer, East Frisia — issued this scrip during the coin shortage that plagued Germany's postwar economy in 1921. A private civic organization stepping into emergency currency production speaks to how thoroughly the normal monetary supply had broken down.

Hartung & Co. in Hamburg handled a substantial volume of notgeld commissions during this period. Designer Arthur Götting, based in Pretz, remains a minor but traceable figure in the regional printing trade.
