Obverse description The octagonal flan features the municipal arms of Tübingen at centre, depicting a crowned shield charged with a diagonal band, supported by two confronted lions rampant whose forepaws meet above the shield. A beaded inner border frames the central device. The circular legend reads UNIVERSITÄTS STADT in the upper arc and TÜBINGEN in the lower arc, separated by two six-pointed star ornaments, all in raised Latin lettering against a flat field.

Reverse description The reverse of this octagonal notgeld piece displays a large, bold numeral '50' dominating the upper two-thirds of the field in deeply incuse raised relief. Below, in two lines of capital Latin lettering, the inscription KLEINGELD- ERSATZ occupies the central zone, with the date 1917 struck in the lower field. A continuous beaded border runs along all eight inner edges of the flan, framing the design.
