| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the municipal coat of arms of Tremessen, depicting a mitred bishop saint facing front, shown in half-length within a plain shield, raising one hand in benediction and holding a staff in the other. A small eight-pointed star ornament appears above the shield in the upper field. The circular legend STADT TREMESSEN runs along the lower periphery in incuse Latin lettering, flanked on either side by a raised dot border encircling the entire design. |

Tremessen — the German name for Trzemeszno, in what was then the Prussian province of Posen — issued this notgeld piece in 1917 as the imperial government's wartime metal requisitions stripped municipal circulation of its small change. Zinc was the compromise: too brittle for reliable striking but available when copper and nickel were being redirected to shell casings. The Funck reference distinguishes at least two die varieties for this type, suggesting the city returned to the press more than once to meet demand.
