| Obverse description | Orange and black letterpress note with a central vignette of the Tabakmesshaus Kosmos building rendered in black line engraving against an orange sky, flanked on either side by stylised tobacco-leaf cartouches enclosing the monogram 'TM' in white. Below the building vignette, the issuer's name 'TABAKMESSHAUS KOSMOS LEIPZIG' is set in large bold capitals, followed by a text panel in German stating the redemption obligation dated Leipzig, 1 September 1921, bearing the manuscript signature of A. Otto for Messhaus Kosmos. The denomination '50 PFENNIG' appears in large numerals in the lower left and right corners, with the printer's imprint 'Druck von Adolf Forker, Leipzig' at the foot. |

A privately issued Notgeld from the inflationary spiral of the early Weimar period, this piece was redeemable at the Tabakmesshaus Kosmos, a tobacco trading house in Leipzig. Corporate and commercial Notgeld of this type — issued by firms rather than municipalities — circulated as small-change substitutes when the Reichsbank could not keep low-denomination coinage in supply. Adolf Forker was a Leipzig-based printer who handled a significant volume of regional Notgeld commissions during this period.
The 1921 date places this before the catastrophic hyperinflation of 1922–23, when such small-denomination scrip became worthless within days of printing.
