Stavenhagen is a small Mecklenburg town best known as the birthplace of Fritz Reuter, the Low German dialect writer. This piece is Notgeld — emergency municipal currency issued during the currency chaos of the early Weimar period, when the Reichsbank could not supply sufficient small change and local savings institutions stepped in. Stadtsparkasse issues are among the more institutionally conservative of Notgeld producers; most towns issued paper, making aluminium struck pieces from this period notably less common.
The Funck reference places this among a numbered variety sequence, suggesting at least minor die or issue distinctions within the Stavenhagen 50 Pfennig type.
