Treffurt is a small town on the Werra river in Thuringia, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1920, its savings bank stepped in to plug a severe shortage of small-denomination coinage — not by any formal monetary authority, but out of practical necessity. This Kleingeldersatz note was one of thousands of such emergency issues that flooded the German market in the years immediately following the war, most printed by commercial jobbers in Berlin or Leipzig and redeemable only within the issuing locality.
Selmar Bayer was a mid-tier Berlin printing house that produced Notgeld for numerous minor issuers during this period. The run quantities for individual Treffurt issues are unrecorded.
