Sportvereinigung St. Georg was a Hamburg sports club, and this 1921 Pfennig note belongs to the wave of privately issued Notgeld that flooded Germany during the postwar small-change famine. The Hamburger Turnerschaft von 1816 — one of the oldest gymnastics associations in Germany, founded just a year after Waterloo — had by this point merged its sporting interests under the St. Georg banner, making the issuing authority an unusual hybrid of athletic club and civic institution rather than a municipality or savings bank.

A. Mühlhan designed the note locally. Club-issued Notgeld of this type rarely circulated far beyond the membership.
