German club notgeld from the inflation period, issued by the Hamburg gymnastics society tracing its founding to 1816 — one of the oldest turner organizations in the country. The Hamburger Turnerschaft's notgeld was a practical response to the acute small-change shortage that plagued Germany from 1919 onward, when municipalities and private bodies alike filled the gap left by hoarded coins.
A. Mühlhan was a Hamburg-based printer responsible for a number of local notgeld issues from this period. Collector demand for series notgeld was already influencing print runs by 1921, and it is often impossible to determine how much of any given club issue actually circulated versus being sold directly to collectors.
