Obverse description The obverse is printed in brown, black, and turquoise-blue on cream paper, with a decorative scalloped outer border. At centre, the crowned coat of arms of Cologne — a blue shield bearing a black cross and eleven flames arranged around it, with a crested helm above — is set against a brown ground within an ornate cartouche with acanthus scroll supporters. A scroll banner at the top carries the issuer's name in Gothic script. The denomination '50 Pfg.' appears in red within blue-framed shield vignettes at upper left and right, while Gothic script payment text is arranged in the two flanking panels; the serial number and account designation 'Konto E' appear at the lower corners.

Reverse description The reverse carries a full-width pen-and-ink style vignette of Brühl's market square as it appeared on 1 July 1873, enclosed within a decorative brown border studded with turquoise-blue oval ornaments. In the foreground, townspeople in period dress converse near a water pump, with tall trees to the left framing a row of half-timbered and rendered burgher houses receding into the distance. The caption 'Der Markt 1.J. 1873.' is inscribed in script at lower right of the vignette.
