Suhl's Sights Series notgeld was issued during the inflationary emergency currency wave that swept German municipalities between 1918 and 1922, when the Reichsbank's output could not keep pace with demand for small-denomination coins and bills. Suhl, a Thuringian town with a centuries-old arms manufacturing tradition, joined hundreds of other cities in commissioning locally themed collector pieces — the "Sights Series" label signals these were designed as much for the collector market as for actual exchange.

Adolf Forker of Leipzig handled a substantial volume of municipal notgeld work during this period. The signature of Hertwig likely represents a city treasurer or finance official countersigning on behalf of the Stadtverwaltung.
