The Flügelaltar — a winged altarpiece — at the church in Frauenbreitungen was a locally significant medieval artwork, and this Notgeld issue was explicitly designed around it as part of a "Sights Series," a format that became fashionable among German municipalities in 1921 as a way to generate premium income from collectors rather than simply covering small-change shortages. Collectors paid face value or above for aesthetically appealing Notgeld, which meant the notes were often never spent at all — a deliberate subsidy mechanism dressed up as currency.
The joint issuance by two adjacent municipalities, Altenbreitungen and Frauenbreitungen, is itself unusual. Adolf Forker of Leipzig produced a substantial volume of Notgeld for Thuringian issuers during this period.
