Aurich, the administrative seat of the Ostfriesland district in Lower Saxony, issued notgeld in considerable variety during the early 1920s inflation spiral. This 50 Pfennig piece bears the signature of Siegfried Abegg, who served as Aurich's Bürgermeister during this period — his name appearing directly on the note gave the issue a degree of personal civic accountability unusual even by notgeld standards, where municipal authority was typically represented by title rather than individual name.
H. G. Rahtgens of Lübeck handled a substantial volume of municipal notgeld contracts across northern Germany in 1921, operating as one of the regional workhorses of the inflation-era small-denomination printing trade.
