Schlitz is a small town in Hesse whose medieval castle complex, the Schloss Schlitz, remained in the hands of the Counts of Schlitz genannt von Görtz well into the twentieth century. During the acute small-change shortages of the early Weimar period, private estates and municipal administrations across Germany issued their own emergency currency — Notgeld — to keep local commerce functioning. This piece was issued by the Burggüter administration, the landed estate management body attached to the castle, almost certainly for use among workers and tenants on the property.
