Additional information

Wächtersbacher Steingutfabrik, the ceramics manufacturer operating out of Schlierbach in Hesse, issued iron notgeld tokens during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in the early 1920s. With the Reichsbank unable to keep subsidiary coinage in circulation — coins were being hoarded or melted as metal values fluctuated against a collapsing currency — factories frequently issued their own scrip to pay workers in denominations usable at company facilities or local merchants.

Iron was a pragmatic choice: cheap, available, and sufficiently unappealing to hoarders.
