Rottenburg an der Laaber is a small Bavarian market town, and this zinc piece is a product of the Kleingeldersatz emergency — the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany from 1916 onward as copper and nickel were consumed by the war machine. Hundreds of municipalities, utilities, and private firms issued their own notgeld coinage in zinc and iron, most intended for only local acceptance.
