Obverse description Printed in red and black letterpress on a cream ground, the obverse is framed by a dark geometric border, with the Gothic title 'Notgeld der Stadt Apolda' running the full width at the head of the note. The municipal coat of arms of Apolda is centred in the upper field above the large red denomination numeral '50' and the inscription 'PFENNIG' in black, flanked in two columns by the legal tender clause at left and the redemption condition at right. The date 'Apolda, den 1. August 1921.' appears at foot, accompanied by two facsimile signatures — Heyne as Bürgermeister-Stellv. at lower left and Walther Fischer as Vorsitzender at lower right — with the printer's imprint 'ADOLF FORKER, LEIPZIG' at the base.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in black and sage-green on a cream ground, enclosed within an ornate multi-band border of repeating geometric and foliate motifs, with the denomination numeral '50' in red at each corner. The central vignette presents a detailed line-engraved illustration of an industrial knitting or Raschel loom, an allusion to Apolda's celebrated textile manufacturing tradition, set above a two-line rhyming couplet in black letterpress. The series letter 'D' in red is positioned at upper left within the inner border.
