The circular legend in Latin characters reads ANNA ROTH WALDBEEREN & PILZE GROSSHANDLUNG, encircling the field, with REGEN BAYER WALD appearing in the lower arc, each phrase separated by a star. The large numeral 50 dominates the central field, rendered in bold raised relief against an otherwise plain background. The overall design is purely typographic, with no pictorial elements, consistent with the utilitarian character of German Kleingeldersatzmarken of the early Weimar inflation period. |

A piece of German Notgeld, almost certainly issued during the post-WWI shortage of small-denomination coinage that plagued Bavarian market towns in the early 1920s. Anna Roth's wholesale forest goods business — dealing in wild berries and mushrooms — was typical of the rural Bavarian economy around Regen, a small town on the Schwarzer Regen river in the Bavarian Forest. That a private trader issued scrip redeemable at her own counter says more about the collapse of Reich monetary infrastructure than any government decree could.
