| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse is printed in green, black, and red, with two interlocking circular vignettes at centre: the left medallion contains the rampant lion of the Sonneberg civic arms in dark red, while the right medallion bears the denomination numeral '50' within a guilloche border inscribed 'Not-Geld Pfennig' in red script. Large decorative scroll volutes flank both medallions on either side. The issuing authority 'Sonneberg i. Thür.' is lettered in bold Gothic script across the top, with two manuscript facsimile signatures below flanked by the titles 'Magistrat:' and 'Gemeinderat:', and the validity inscription 'gültig bis 1. Juli 1922' in Gothic lettering along the lower edge. The printer's imprint 'Thür. Verlagsanstalt G.m.b.H. Jena' appears at the very foot of the note. |

Sonneberg's identity as Germany's toy-manufacturing capital — responsible for a significant share of the world's dolls and puppets in the early twentieth century — made the puppetry theme on this Notgeld series genuinely local rather than decorative. The town was essentially marketing itself in paper form during the 1922 small-change crisis, when municipal issuers across Germany produced collectible Kleingeldersatz that the public hoarded rather than spent, which suited cash-strapped municipalities just fine.
Thüringische Verlagsanstalt in Jena handled a considerable volume of Thuringian Notgeld printing during this period. The "C" issue designation indicates a third print run within the series, suggesting earlier issues moved quickly enough to warrant replenishment.
