Tucher Brauerei issued zinc notgeld tokens during the early 1920s when the German small-change crisis left ordinary transactions nearly impossible — federal coinage had effectively vanished from circulation, and private firms, municipalities, and breweries alike stepped in to fill the gap. Brewery tokens served double duty: circulating as functional small change while quietly tying redemption to the issuer's own premises.
Zinc was the material of necessity, not preference, chosen because aluminum and other metals were either scarce or reserved.
