Prückner's delicatessen on Nuremberg's Karolinenstraße was among the specialty food merchants that turned to privately issued zinc tokens during the acute small-change shortages of 1917–1921, when wartime metal requisitions had gutted the Reichsbank's capacity to supply low-denomination coinage. The "Hoflieferant" designation — court supplier — indicates the firm had held a royal Bavarian warrant, a distinction that became largely ceremonial after November 1918 but which merchants continued advertising well into the Republic years.

Zinc was the default emergency material precisely because it had minimal strategic value to the military by that stage of the war.
